In Underdog's first Portland, volleyball season we had some serious players show up ready to fight for the championship. In true underdog style, the stakes were high with not only a championship T-shirt on the line, but the title of the FIRST Portland Underdog league Championship. Players came from all over Portland to witness the event.
In the first round semi-finals, Team "Wham!" held the undefeated title beating Team Tipsky 25-17, 25-15, 25-15. The scores do not reflect the serving skills or rock star underdog style passing that Team Tipsky threw at Team Wham. In the end, Wham headed to the Championship round; while Team Tipsky headed to court two for the 3rd and 4th place play off.
On court two during the semi-finals, Go, Bump, Dig came out strong with a 25-23 win against Indy #2, Captain Katie K served and spiked her way into play of the game with an ace serve followed by two key blocks for the first game win. Indy #2 would not go down with out a fight and came back to win game #2 and 3; thus, earning their NEW TEAM NAME of "CAN YOU DIG IT?".
In the championship game, Indy #2 (aka Team "Can you dig it?") came out pumped up from their semi-final win. They took the "undefeated title away from Team "Wham!" with a 25-16 win in the first game. Due to illness team captain, Napoleon Stewart, sat on the sidelines watching anxiously as Nathan, Randy and Chris held off the Wham offense. Team Wham, lead by captain Travis "Hops", came out strong in the second game to defend their honor. With 8 kills and 10,000 blocks Travis held the team together for the second game win of 25-17. The passing skills of each of the gals paid off for the boys of Wham, while they hit away leaving Team "Can you dig it?" trying to answer their own question. With a 3-minute break in between games, both team stepped on the court with only one goal in mind.... "WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP SHIRT!"
Team "Can you dig it?" (Indy #2), won game three after 25 minutes of a point for point match. The final score was 25-23 giving this team the T-shirt, the title and the answer to their question....... THEY CAN DIG IT!
Team Wham took second place, while Team Tipsky snagged third place from "Go, Bump, Dig." All around this night was filled with true underdog style volleyball, good people, and good times.
See you next season.... only in underdog style.
I never would have known that this team just met at the beginning of the season. They play great together and with a teammate like Thao they are unstoppable. Thao was always in the right place at the right time with beautiful bumps over the net.
