The montra throughout the night was for Big Pink was "This is the Playoffs". There's regular season effort and playoff effort. The great teams shine the brightest when the lights are brightest. Big Pink is one of those teams. An inexplicable 5 seed, Big Pink certainly had had better regular seasons in their history. But "this is the playoffs". Big Pink came in super focused and slugged their way to convincing victories en route to the Division 1 Championship on Wednesday at Westmoreland Park. Even though a lower seed, Big Pink was never really challenged throughout the tournament in rolling through the 4, 1, and 2 seeds. They just hit and hit and then hit some more. They truly looked like a well-oiled Pink Machine. Super focused and error free throughout, they suffocated all opponents including a convincing 34-10 victory in the championship game over the 2 seed Montathriillas. The semi-final, they won 19-13 over 1 seed Cascade, although this game wasn't really that close. Big Pink led by 10 going into the bottom of the 7th. A potent offense getting extra base hits from Seth Buckwallter and Jeff "el Hefe" Wagner almost every time up to go along with great fielding and hitting from Shawna Adams and Leigh Coppola. Pair this with Wagner and Buckwalter switching off every other inning at pitcher keeping opposing offenses off-balance and first baseman Audrey Watson catching everything in sight at first. Finish it with there not really being a weak point on the team at the plate or in the field and you have a team that was very difficult, if not impossible, to beat. Like LeBron's Cleveland Cavaliers or Tim Duncan's Spurs, the great teams know when it's regular season and when it really counts. Big Pink is one of those teams. One of the best performances I've seen in my five years of Underdog softball umpiring. Congratulations Big Pink Machine. You really were invincible tonight!
Big Pink brought home another championship Wednesday night. It was due in no small part to Seth Buchwalter. Always one of the most talented players on the diamond, Seth contributes in all phases of the game with great hitting, great speed, great pitching, and great fielding. But what makes him Player of the Week is a fifth phase: sportsmanship. Seth is a great leader on his own team, keeping his team focused but in a pleasant manner that keep everybody loose. He's also super cool to the opposing team which just makes everything fun for everybody. Thanks for being a good sport, Seth. You're Playoff Week's Player of the Week.
