Through rain soaked and rained out weeks the Unthank Championship came down to a game played at King School Park between the Bar Room Heroes and the Aqua Daddies. Bar Room had previously won a championship in extra innings over the Aqua Daddiesand and the Daddies were looking for some revenge. The game was filled with great catches and defensive plays but the first few innings were won by Bar Room as they scored a quick 5 runs, while holding the Daddies to none. However, the Daddies would not give up, battling back to within two runs of the Heroes. With a score of 6-4 in the 6th inning and the tying run on 2nd base for the Daddies, a line drive kick up the middle looked to be heading towards the outfield but pitcher Brandon Thompson made one of the best plays in the history of kickball. He stuck his leg out in an effort to block the ball down, and in doing so, the ball ricocheted off his foot, directly to the first baseman for out number three. This snuffed out a late inning rally for the Daddies and swung the momentum in favor of the Heroes. But the Daddies held Bar Room to no runs in the top of the 7th and before you knew it the Daddies had the bases loaded with 1 out in the bottom of the inning. All they needed was a clutch kickā¦ and that is what they received. A line drive was crushed towards the Bar Room Shortstop, it bounced off of her chest and into the outfield where the left fielder made an amazing diving catch - there was tons of excitement as Bar Room thought they were about to pull out a victory. However, a heads up play by the Daddies base runners allowed two runs to score on the first touch by the shortstop, forcing the game into extra innings! In the 8th inning Bar Room used some crazy running by Todd Whittington to score a quick run making the score 7-6 in favor of the Heroes. The Daddies fought back though, loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 8th. With all the pressure in the kick ball world placed on the kicker, he booted a line drive towards short. This time it was fielded cleanly and the Bar Room Heroes recorded the last out, winning what turned out to be one of the craziest Championship games ever played in Unthank history. The Bar Room Heroes win the Fall Unthank Championship 7-6 over a tough Aqua Daddies squad.
For being a solid captain and making one of the best plays ever while playing pitcher, Brandon Thompson is our Player of the Week. He literally stuck his leg out in a wild attempt to stop a line drive and it ricocheted directly to first base for a game saving third out. You had to be there to believe it but it was amazing!
