Jock Itch became the Cinderella story of the night as they played their hearts out in three thrilling matches..
The night began with a near disaster as Jock Itch, the only Indy team in the league, was almost forced to forfeit as they waited for players to arrive. The team ended up with just enough to field a team and unfortunately would see no more grey shirts come walking through the front doors. The players were gassed by the end of the night and drenched in sweat.
Their first match although a clear victory took grit as the infamous Never Nudes peppered the goal and forced multiple saves out of the Itchy's platoon of keepers. The next match was a overtime marathon in which both teams were reduced to playing 3v3 and continued this way for almost a complete third half, pushing their match to almost 36 minutes in length - mind you with no subs.
The final showed what Underdog is all about as the JI Joes (and Janes) fought hard to upset the undefeated (and very purple) Big Green. In a close back and forth match which included a lot of big shots, spectacular saves, smart passing and well lots of laughter, the team came through and made it happen. They capped off the victory by holding on for the last two minutes as the BG's gave them everything they had, which included some singing and chanting from their boisterous crew of fans.
You had to be there to really take the whole night in and experience what a real Underdog story this was, but we guarantee you the Jock Itch crew will go down in history as real Underdogs. It was great having you guys and congrats on a special season!
Ingrid could be heard throughout the gym coughing as she pushed herself through three games on her way to a championship. Playing for her Indy squad who on this night were short players she pushed herself to the limit.
At one point before starting what would be a marathon overtime session in her second match Ms. Haugaard ran over to the side to grab water. Her thirst was only quenched for a moment after the fatigue set back in and she leaned forward putting her arms on her legs. Breathing heavily Ingrid lifted herself back up and helped to carry her team past the semifinal stage.
With her light grey shirt turned dark Ingrid powered through the rest of the night and collapsed to the floor when it was all done. It was a show of true Underdog spirit and we wanted to make sure she knew we noticed. Congrats to her and her Indy squad on a great season and a big championship run.
One a side note... Thanks to all who played Underdog Futsal this season! It was a blast!
Here at Underdog we certainly do promote a competitive game. The idea that someone ends up with a win is an important component to what we do. However, it is the style in which you go about this that truly defines whether you are Underdog material.
Ms. Hebbeler proved not only to us but to the other team that she may be the nicest player in the league. Her style fits Underdog to a t. In most sports leagues, usually when there is a bit of a bump or collision you may see some squabbling or a stink eye. Not here. Not Jennifer. Her polite nature, kind words, and apologies throughout the match warranted compliments from the other team during the run of play. As the ball rolled out of play a Bazi opponent turned to Jenn and told her that she was just the nicest person. It is this type of moment that really defines the league and one that we hope we will continue to see throughout this season.
Better yet, when she was told that she won the coveted POTW award for this very reason her response (with a smile) was a simple, "Well it is just a game, right?"
We are proud to have you as part of Underdog Futsal Jennifer!
