Taylor Torgerson
Taylor Torgerson
Taylor has a flare for the dramatic.
In trying to field a ball on Thursday night at Westmoreland Park, Taylor had the unfortunate experience of being struck near the eye with the ball. The ball hit his glasses and left a pretty nasty gash under his eye, probably requiring stitches. I was really impressed with how calm he stayed as he left the field to head for the hospital saying "Hey. It's all part of the game." I think his calmness really put his team at ease and made the best of an unfortunate situation. It's this grace that has made Taylor Torgerson, Week 3's Player of the Week.

Sherri Draws the Big Walk
Milwaukie Lumber
Sherri Hinzmann came to play tonight. By her own admission, it had "been a while" since she played softball. That didn't deter her from giving her best effort and, come her last bat, the determination paid off in coaxing a walk vs the Viking pitcher. A big roar went up from her teammates. The Milwaukie Lumber Company feels like a family out there with the way they support each other and tonight was no exception. Congratulations Sherri and the Milwaukie Lumber Company... you are this week's Player of the Week!

Amazing Catch at Second Base
In the books, it went as a pop out to second base. Those were there know it was much more than this. Katie, playing 2B, had a ball hit into short right field. She turned to go back on the ball and reached up but was just able to get her glove on it. But Katie didn't give up. After the ball bounced off her glove, she stuck with the play and was able to make the catch after the tip. It was an amazing play and stemmed from Katie's never say die attitude. This is the type of attitude that exemplifies the true Underdog Spirit. Congratulations, Katie! You're this week's Player of the Week.

Jeff Takes Liner Off the Shin and Still Finishes 2 Games
I knew Jeff Johnson was tough, but this was ridiculous. Jeff took a line drive off his leg in the 2nd inning of his team's first game at Westmoreland Park on Thursday night. The spot swelled up quick and he had to leave the game. But just like Willis Reed in the NBA Finals... Jeff Johnson returned. He returned to pitch and hit masterfully as his team was able to eek out a 13-12 win over the Leftovers in Game 2. Such a valiant effort is what we at Underdog appreciate. Congratulations, Jeff. You're this week's Player of the Week!

Jon Richardson
Dark Horse
Jon Richardson pitched back-to-back games Thursday night, leading Dark Horse to a hard-fought 11-10 loss to Ice Cold Pitchers, before coming back to the mound to help his team grind out a 23-20 win over Milwaukie's Best. His performance Thursday and this season makes him more than deserving of Player of the Week. Jon has been a consistent presence on the mound for Dark Horse since week one and always plays with plenty of passion and heart!

Leftovers
Mike helped Leftovers grind out a 9-7 win over Dark Horse from the mound, before immediately returning to the pitching circle to lead his team to a 29-5 win over Ice Cold Pitchers and a spot in the championship game. Not only did Mike pitch the majority of the innings in back-to-back games, but he also came through at the plate, consistently finding ways to get on base and hit extra base hits. His enthusiasm and dedication make him a perfect choice for Player of the Week.

Matt Bergio
Matt Bergio
Sassy Sasquatches
Matt Bergio pitched back-to-back games for Sassy Sasquatches, leading his team to a decisive 21-7 win over Viking, before coming back to pitch all seven innings in the championship game. Matt also made the most of his opportunities at the plate, finding ways to get on base in almost every plate appearance. Matt had a great attitude the entire season and was a terrific leader for his team. He is definitely deserving of Player of the Week!
