Spring Softcore Volleyball at Harriet Tubman Wednesdays

Wednesday, April 20

The Strays forfeited to Sportland.

Carli Bergey
Carli Bergey
Sloppie Sets
Carli Bergey is our first POTW of the Wednesday Spring Softcore Season at Tubman and she earned that honor from some definite hard work. Sloppie Sets only had 4 players, so Carli decided to cover the floor not only for herself, but for those missing 2 teammates. We counted at least 6 times that Carli flung herself across the floor for agile digs and saves - good thing she had knee pads, because they were put to good use. Her enthusiasm was contagious as the Sloppies gained momentum throughout the match and ended the third set with the closest margin of loss, 25-20. One of her dives even included a nifty tuck and roll, bouncing back up for the next hit. Amazing work Carli!

Julie Lesseg
Julie Lesseg
Sportland
Julie Lesseg of Sportland was all over the place on Wednesday night at Tubman - but in a GOOD way! Her consistency throughout the match vs. Double Digits was amazing and she can do it all. She got to business at net and drove ball after ball over the net with uncanny precision and kill skills. Let's not even talk about service accuracy - a near perfect night at the line which resulted in many runs of points delivered by Julie's power. With her all-around great games, Julie was able to lead her Sportland teammates in a 2-1 victory and sealed the deal on naming her POTW for April 27!

Katie Humm
Katie Humm
Sportland
Sportland is on a roll - POTW two weeks in a row! This week, USL salutes Katie Humm for her all-around spark on the court. And her well-deserved honor isn't just for her ability to make good things happen for her team, but for her amazing humor and cheerleading qualities. Katie is not only truly supportive to Sportland, but we often heard her give shout-outs to her opponents on Straight Shots. In addition to being funny enough to do stand-up, Katie also very adept at first-aid, carefully attending to a teammate who suffered a sprained ankle. No sooner after playing nurse, she was back on court showing off her cool layouts for digs and saves. And her work at the service line resulted in a few great point runs which contributed to Sportland's 2-1 game victory. Katie does it all - athlete, comedian and medic!

Nicholas Nascimento
Nicholas Nascimento
The Strays
This weeks player of the week goes to Nicholas N of the Strays. It a very close game this week, the Strays stayed strong and took home the victory. Nicholas was on his game tonight at the net making no less that 7 blocks throughout the night. His high flying serves were tricky for the other team to return. He and the whole team, spectators included, were on there game tonight and they made it a fun one to watch. Way to go Nicholas and all of the Strays!

Patrick Arcinas
Patrick Arcinas
Sloppie Sets
OK, so when Patrick Arcinas of Sloppie Sets is serving, you gotta have your wits about you because the rocket is coming in for a landing. The receiver of his service has to be ready for the hard onslaught of power that emanates from his delivery. Patrick can skim the ball over net by just a few inches to spare, and if it doesn't land as an ace, it truly looks as though it's painful to set and bump. An opponent who was looking on said Patrick's service is so hard you have to brace yourself. While Sloppie Sets lost all three matches to Sportland, his alert play at net and behind the service line kept them close in the final two games. Only the strong survive Patrick's serves!

Stephanie Lundin
Stephanie Lundin
The Strays
100% is a term which aptly describes The Strays's Stephanie Lundin, 'cause that's how much she gives week in and week out. But this week she earns USL's POTW because she gave 150% (or even 200%!). We had to use a calculator to keep track of how many times she hit the floor for incredible diving moves. Stephanie flat out killed it in effort vs. Sportland by sending hard serves to their defense and aggressively attacking whatever volleys came her way. Her passionate play was so effective in inspiring her teammates, that momentum swayed their way as they came back with a Game 3 victory after Sportland won the first two. We'll have whatever Stephanie is having, 'cause her energy and enthusiasm are undeniable - congrats!

Michael Marxen
Michael Marxen
Sloppie Sets
If there was a house on fire, you would want Mike Marxen around to help. That's because Mike exudes a sense of calmness, while also being the guy you want in a tense or immediate situation. He comes out of nowhere to deliver the needed block, assist, dig and point production to get the win. Sloppie Sets's playoff game vs. Double Digits saw Mike give it everything he had in order to secure a 2-0 game win for the match with his excellent play and court coverage. That set the Sloppies up for the next semifinal game vs. Sportland. With Mike leading the way, the Sloppies were able to win a convincing Game 1. After giving Sportland everything they could handle, the Sloppies ultimately lost the 2nd and 3rd sets to go down in defeat. But they provided some exciting action all night sparked by Mike Marxen's drive and determination!

Dan MacNeil
Dan MacNeil
Straight Shots
On the surface, Straight Shots player Dan MacNeil comes across as a really mellow, calm and collected guy. Just wait till he steps foot on the court, 'cause he's a Jekyll and Hyde type of guy. No mild-mannered player whatsoever - Dan is eerily always in the right spot at the right time and has a sixth sense about the game of volleyball. While he has been a major contributor all season to Straight Shots's second place finish in league play, Dan knew that the championship USL wristbands were in his future Wednesday. In the semi final game vs. The Strays, Dan powered perfect serves for points, made crushing drives for kills and his keen sense of placement at net proved extremely valuable to the Shots as they pulled out a 2-1 victory to rocket them into the championship game vs. Sportland. Dan took the reins again in this match with accurate setting and getting needed points at just the right time. This resulted in a Straight Shots 3-0 game victory over Sportland and those USL wristbands secured. Because Dan knew it all along....great season Straight Shots and POTW Dan MacNeil!
