Manish Leads Spiketastic Fantastic-ly!
Spiketastic lost no momentum coming off last week's Midcore championship second place to be ready to take on whatever All About the Ace threw at them. And no one was more ready than Manish Patel. Easily the tallest guy on the floor, his height makes for a predominant factor in going in for the kill on offense. Manish was especially on the point during Game 1 when Spiketastic battled an extra point win over AAA 26-24. His crashing hits coming from back court clear over the net made his opponents fear the onslaught and defend as best they could, but to no avail. Spiketastic lost a little momentum by Game 3, but made it close to come up short 25-23. Manish's work at the serving, line and net were key in winning the match for his squad. Great work from you to earn POTW honors!

Net Ninjas!!
There's a special spark on the Net Ninjas, and it's that goofy guy, Nialls Chavez! Nialls always ignites the mood of the game and is a reminder to everybody that the key word in sports and teamwork is FUN. The other big reason he gets the USL POTW shout out this week is due to the fact that Nialls is also awarded MIP (Most Improved Player) for Thursday Midcore at Tubman. We've witnessed a big transformation in Nialls's game - from his underhand serves to big league overhead smashers, from wondering where he's supposed to be at the net, to become a wondrous force on offense throwing down some crazy tips and kills. This all proves what a coachable guy he is. So much so that he was a big influence on the Ninjas' 6-0 game victory over the span of two games on Thursday. Nialls' has gone from beginner to an advanced level performance while maintaining that silliness that keeps the game fun - well done!

Kelly Youngberg

Scrappy Killmore
It's about time we gave Scrappy Killmore's captain and squad leader Kelly Youngberg the POTW award. This lady is all about teamwork, sportsmanship and skill! Kelly manages to call in her friends, co-workers, and who knows who else to take part in a sport she obviously loves. She is never without a smile on her face and enthusiasm in her veins. Not to mention, Kelly has a pretty mean serve which can cause a lot of trouble when you're trying to defend it. Playing a double header on Thursday Midcore, Scrappy Killmore fought hard in the first game vs. Spiketastic and scratched out a win in the second set. Bring on Net Ninjas in the second game and while Kelly and team gave it all, they wound up on the losing end of the match. Through it all, Kelly is smiling and having a great time and really embodies the true USL spirit. Go Kelly!

All About That Ace
All About That Ace's "ace" Nathan Bell was in top form on Thursday at Tubman Midcore by taking charge and providing the firepower to lead his buds to a 2-1 game victory over Spiketastic. With the Aces having his back with precision volleys and assists, Nathan was practically flawless in whatever he set out to execute, especially from back row defense where his keen eye knew all the outs and barely ins and never missed a hit. Through three tough and close sets, He was the catalyst in pushing the Aces to bring their best when it counted. Nathan's one of those guys who's not a flashy player, but don't underestimate him, 'cause he's always consistently strong!

The Ninja Warriors Win Big in Midcore Semis at Tubman
While yours truly typically awards a USL POTW honor each week, Thursday night at Tubman Midcore deserved a special honor. And the rare Team of the Week (TOTW) accolade goes to Net Ninjas. This crazy crew started with a few folks at USL indoor and sand volleyball over 5 years ago led by Scott and Sam Hoback. Ninja Squadron Leaders Scott and Sam were joined over the years by Chris, Gloria, Nialls, Nicole and Kristi who make up the current squad. They play like a force of nature with some of the best teamwork we've ever witnessed in USL volleyball. They've won back-to-back-to back championships this past year and it could be a 2016-17 sweep if they bring their best to next week's championship game vs. All About That Ace. Playing without their Service Queen Gloria on Thursday night, the Ninjas were able to fill in with the usual killer moves at net and screamin' service by Chris and Scott, perfectly placed assists by Sam and Kristi, and Nialls providing the impressive digs and defense along with his usual silliness that keeps the mood fun. All this effort added up to a 2-0 match vs. Spiketastic and a trip to the finals next week. Oh, and one other thing....next week will be the Ninjas last games together, as Sam and Scott will be exiting the NW for sunnier, warmer climes in SoCal. We're sad to see the Ninjas break up the fantastic fun and teamwork, but thankful for the great sportsmanship, competition and incredible athleticism each and every one of their members has shared over their time with USL. Thanks for the memories Ninjas, and you'll always find a home with your USL peeps! HIYA!

Net Ninjas!!
Sam has not only lead the Ninjas to glory and championship this season, but she has fearlessly steered the team to winning seasons and fun for too many seasons to count. It is but sweet, sweet spleandor that her last season as captain with Underdog volleyball was capped with another 'Ship for the Ninjas. We will miss you Sam, and in honor of your last game, you are our Underdog volleyball player of the week!
