Jen H aka The Spirit Bank
Jen H aka The Spirit Bank
Breaking the (3 inches of) Ice
Jen H came to Bocce ready to go from the first toss of the pallino. From the get go she was everyone's PAL(lino). Jen grabbed the first spirit ticket by being the nicest and most excited spotter, giving both teams advice and cheering for every bocce roll. She then proceeded to be the first to dance on the bocce courts after a nice shot, samba-ing to the rhythmic drum beats from across the street.

By the end of the first game Jen had a handful of spirit tickets and for the rest of the night deposited all tickets for herself and her team directly in her back pocket, or as she liked to call it "the spirit bank". By the end of two games Jen's spirit bank was full, her team was happy and everyone she played with enjoyed themselves.

For starting the night off right and getting that spirit going early we thank you Jen! We know you will be making many deposits throughout the season.

Your Bocce Is A Wonderland-Indy #2
Who says a mustache is only a facial accessory? When crafting a clever theme night outfit one must take several things into consideration. #1 Creativity. Simply opening the package and slapping on a 'stach is fine and also funny - but why not kick it up a notch? That's just what Eimee did. Now we don't want to send the wrong message but when someone rolls with a mustache on their lower back there's only one name for it and it's a Tramp 'Stache - and rockin' one definitely earns you player of the week honors.

Just Steve
Just Steve
Steve lights up the Hibocce(s) with SPIRIT!
Many know him as "Just Steve," and he likes it that way. When asked on opening day what his nickname was, that was his simple reply... just Steve.

This sums up Steve well. He is by no means a stick in the mud but he comes to socialize, drink and play some bocce. The dancing, celebrations and plethora of three inch jokes are great, but you won't see Steve jumping for joy every time a great shot is made.

Today however, Steve brought the spirit (along with some delicious Brats for his squad). Yes, you will not believe it, but Steve bent over! He, and proven by his teammates excitement at the event, showed us his moves and bent over to throw a ball between his legs... backwards... ultimately crushing any level of spirit shown by Steve in prior weeks!

For most Underdogers this may seem to hit low on the spiritometer, but for Just Steve, this was cranking up the volume way past ten and we love it. Keep it up, or should we say down, Steve!

Neal Spinler
Neal Spinler
Buncha' Bocce Badasses-Indy #3
On this night the odds were against Neal Spinler. Not only did he have to take on a fierce group of unsung Olympic heroes, but also multiple Quail Men (and women). All were expecting to see a superhero beat down of our beloved Spinler...

But wait, what's that! Yea, over there! It is isn't it.... no it can't be! IT IS! CAPTAIN BOCCE!

Spinler, knowing the night was a loss stayed home, but instead sent his alter ego, Captain Bocce. One of the most intrepid superheroes known to Underdog. He entered the courts standing tall with his helmet glistening in the sun, digital screen reading bocce accross the front. A (nerf) gun holstered to his side was his weapon of choice.

Captain Bocce wiped the grass with his opponents including an epic Ro-Sham-Bo with one of the Quailmen. But alas the evening was over and with a handful of spirit tickets he disappeared.

We don't know when he will reappear but as he walked off into the night, nerf bullets suctioned to his glass visor from battle, all of Underdog bocce ball could only hope that if ever, in a time of need for our sport, for our teams, for our players, that he will return to do battle.

We've Got Spirit
Spirit winners and true lovers of Bocce
We've Got Balls edged out a victory in the fight for spirit awards and kept the ball rolling the whole night long.

Throughout the season the team exuded spirit. Costumes, celebrations and star snacks were just a few of the things that set the team apart.

But more importantly, on this night, was the squads pure love and passion for the game of Bocce. As most teams sat down, upset with their performances, drinking away sorrows, or wrapped up in watching a championship game, WGB, sat at the edge of court one.

They wanted to play. We've Got Balls... well they had balls - in hands, ready to go. What more can you ask for from a team. The great Umberto Granaglia, voted "Player of the Twentieth Century" by the Confédération Mondiale des Sports de Boules would be proud. He would have gladly joined We've Got Balls and played Bocce even when those had lost interest, because Bocce is fun, important and a damn good time.

Now, maybe none of the players on WGB have won 13 world championships like the great Granaglia, but they have the spirit for the game needed and that is what it is all about.

We've Got Balls... we've got admiration (for you).
