It's no secret that rookie teams have to endure a little bit of an adjustment period in USL Dodgeball. That first season is a rite a passage, an initiation. Every USL Dodgeball veteran knows that you have to earn your stripes.
Heather Self showed that not only her own game but her entire team, Edwards Center, has turned a corner. Leading the charge in a their match against Balls of Fury, Self wasn't going to be denied. As the match started to get a little lopsided in the favor of the Balls of Fury squad, Heather decided she wasn't going down without taking some green shirts with her. Although Heather has been a very solid player for the Edwards Center team throughout the season, she played with a little more swagger on Monday night. With an already developed and accurate throwing arm, she started testing a new arsenal of low and misdirected shots and really using the court to her advantage. By the end of Edwards Center second game, the whole team seemed to step it up, become more proactive in their game plan rather than reactive.
So Congrats to Heather Self, OUR UNDERDOG MONDAY NIGHT DODGEBALL PLAYER OR THE WEEK!
No, the Spiderman reference doesn't mean Emily Lundzer was climbing all over the gym at the Friendly House. More than likely, Lundzer simply showed up to help fill a spot for the Edwards Center team and just hung around them most of the night. Either way, simply put, the rook's got talent. Imagine not playing dodgeball since your Elementary School years and then to being thrown into the Lion's Den we call Monday Night USL Dodgeball. Little adversity there with a sharp and steep learning curve. Now, imagine being able to to snag the majority of the dodgeballs thrown in your direction, adversity overcome, learning curve flattens.
Whether or not Emily was bitten by a radioactive spider in the Friendly House lobby and now possesses superhuman dodgeball prowess is of little importance for this fact remains, catches can win games and Lundzer is a catching machine. Learning the nuances of this game takes more than just a couple of matches, Dodgeball greats are forged in the fires of time, perseverance, and discipline. However, in just her short time on the USL Dodgeball court, Emily has shown she has what it takes.
So Congrats to Emily Lundzer, our MONDAY NIGHT UNDERDOG DODGEBALL OF THE WEEK!!! Hope to see you back on the court soon!
