A great round of good old fashioned Unthank kickball last Sunday that even brought out Huevos Grandes and Drank Epidemic to the field to observe and cheer on the madness.
At 3PM started one of the most memorable post season games to date, pitting a heavily favored Balls Deep against a Clockwork Orange team still rising through a great regular season. It was all defense through the end of regular play, with Clockwork pulling in a miraculous 3 runs and holding Balls Deep to the same. Tied going into the 8th, both sides put up a great defensive effort to keep it there into the 9th. Clockwork started the inning with a runner on 3rd and one out. The first kicker put a great ball into the field to bring their runner in and come ahead by a single run. Balls Deep made short order of the remaining kickers to end out the inning. Deep started the bottom of the 9th with their own runner on third and a single out and heavy footed Brother Jan up to kick. His first boot shot out foul and into the stands. The next pitch was rolled, Jan kicks a great grounder down towards third base which is cut off by a streaking Jason of Clockwork running in from short stop. Jason picks up the ball and tosses a bullet with pinpoint accuracy at the mound as Jamie dropped for the slide. Just inches from the plate, the incredible throw tags Jamie in the back of the head and Jason has saved Clockwork from a tying run!
Jan had rounded to second and with two outs, was left stranded on a bunt back to Clockwork megastar and pitcher, Katie York. A well placed throw to first base to catch the runner, and it was all over. The crowd goes wild!
4PM served to be another close, close game with both Orange-a-tang and Blue Balls playing impeccable defense out in the field. Orange-a-tang takes the first inning for a quick lead which they keep through to the end of the game thanks to yet another great, very close, toss-tag at the plate. Pitcher extraordinaire, Rosen, made a slew of amazing throws from the mound, keeping a majority of Blue Balls lady bunters off the bases throughout the game. Blue Balls, in their own right, kept their defensive game at a high level, keeping the strong offensive kicking O-tang to a mere 3 runs! A great game by both sides, but it was Orange-a-tang that pulled it out in the end to move on to the championship.
And then, there was the battle of the Orange. Orange-a-tang vs. Clockwork Orange for the Unthank finale. Orange-a-tang again brought the first runs in and did what they've done so well all season long. Smart base running and solid kicks found them up by a 3 going into the last inning where they managed to put up 2 more to put the nail in the coffin. Clockwork managed to bring in a great 3 runs against the wall of O-tang defense, but couldn't quite catch up with the amazing gap kicking of the big O-tang kickers. In the bottom of the 7th, Orange-a-tang made every defensive play look like routine and closed the game with a comfortable 6 run lead!
Both teams, Clockwork and Orange-a-tang celebrated these final moments as huge wins. O-tang brought out the champagne and cheers while Clockwork danced and screamed out the joy of finally making it to beautiful #2!
A great finale to a great season of Fall kickball! A day to be revered and remembered for a lifetime... Unthank Kickball, forever!
